tennis shoes

13 Sep

the girls got an invitation for a birthday party at the city museum which is the coolest attraction in st. louis. seriously, checkout the link if you don’t know about it. there were instructions on the invitation that the kids all wear tennis shoes.

scout says, “mommy, we need tennis shoes for the party.”

“you have tennis shoes, honey,” says i.

“no, mommy, we need tennis shoes.”

“i know, sweet daughter. it’s what you wear to gym.”

“no, mommy. it says TENNIS shoes.”

she’s getting increasingly emphatic about them being shoes for tennis. this back and forth goes on a few more rounds before i said,

“what do you think your gym shoes are, lovely?”

“mommy, we have tenna shoes. we need tennis shoes.”

game, set, match. i give.

My oldest daughter carried on a nearly identical conversation with us when she was in preschool. She had a teacher whom she insisted was “Mrs. ICE.”

Her name was Mrs. Zeiss. We called uncle, too.
